I think it’s safe to say that every now and again a gentleman should have a break away from the big city of London and embrace some nature time in the woods. And that’s exactly what I did this weekend, naturally after living in Germany I was used to walking through woods, watching deers shed their antlers whilst the morning fog finally lifted across the woods and fields. If you’re planning to get away for some alone time in the woods, either by yourself or with friends then I have to say the one bit of essential kit you’ll be needing to take with you is a Small Forest Axe. Crafted by the talented blacksmiths Gransfors Bruk from Sweden, they are proudly handmade and once the blacksmith is happy with his work they are hand stamped with each individual smith’s initials. I got AS – Anders Strömstedt. These black smiths believe so much in their hard earned effort that you have a 20 year guarantee.
The axe itself is the same size as as a Hunter’s Axe but is based on a more traditional pattern and poll of design. The blade is thin and the hickery handle is long enough to allow powerful chopping but not too long so it will fit for portability within a rucksack or boot of your car or even boat if you’re lucky enough. Practical for splitting small sticks for building up your camp fire. You can also put it through some small-diameter limb wood for starter fuel in a fireplace.
The profile of the axe itself has a 31/4” face and a 19” hickory handle and the head weighs around 1 1/2lb. And to keep your axe safe from the elements and yourself it comes with a well equipped grain-leather sheath. I have to say this just adds the finishing touch to the axe making it look stylishly awesome.
If you’re new to the wilderness and you’re planning to leave the city lights behind you for the weekend then find the axe for you at Gransfors Bruk Sweden.
